Teen Choice Awards: Kids Vote for Clean Entertainment

Last Monday night, the Teen Choice Awards aired on Fox. The entertainment industry – which selects the TV programs and movies up for awards – packed the nominations with R-rated adult fare…yet when the teenagers’ votes were in, clean, kid-friendly shows crushed the raunchy competition!

Teens picked the clean comedy-adventure Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian over the sex-and-liquor party movie The Hangover and the scatological Land of the Lost for favorite comedy movie. As top TV animated show, offered choices including the foul Family Guy, American Dad and South Park, the teens chose the child-friendly SpongeBob SquarePants. In the “Choice Bromantic Comedy” category, teenagers picked the only PG-13 movie nominated, ignoring the four R-rated nominees. And throughout the night, the romantic (but not sexual) movie Twilight and Disney stars like Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, Selena Gomez and the Jonas Brothers were overwhelming favorites. This stands as proof that teenagers – like most adults – clearly prefer clean, upbeat and family-friendly entertainment…no matter how hard some in Hollywood might try to push them in the wrong direction.
